Background Singapore’s ageing population and evolving family dynamics have weakened intergenerational bonds. With fewer shared spaces and differing communication styles, bridging this divide is key to fostering mutual understanding and support. Why the elderly? Singapore’s ageing population is growing, with the old-age dependency ratio rising from 15.2 to 25.2 between 2014 and 2023. Despite longer lifespans and improved healthcare, intergenerational interaction remains limited, as youths and seniors are often segregated into separate spaces and activities. Family sizes have also shrunk, reducing opportunities for connection. True intergenerational bonding requires more than frequent contact—it depends on meaningful conversations built on emotional openness and mutual understanding. While the elderly and youth face different life stages, creating safe spaces for vulnerability can bridge generational divides and foster deeper, more meaningful interactions. The Problem Elders and youth face connection challenges due to separate lifestyles and communication differences. Encouraging meaningful conversations can help bridge this generational gap. Design Opportunity The contrasting lifestyles of youth and the elderly present a valuable opportunity for emotional connection and perspective-sharing. These differences can foster meaningful bonds where both generations feel heard, valued, and understood. How might we design a platform that fosters meaningful conversations between the elderly and youth, allowing them to share their life experiences, emotions, and perspectives in a safe and welcoming environment? How the Listening Post works: The Listening Post is a cross-generational message exchange system that connects the elderly and youth through meaningful conversations. We believe that there is much that can be learned from both generations. Hence, we provide a space to slow down and reflect on our lives, and seek out advice from a different perspective through message exchange. Participants can exchange letters anonymously with someone from a different generation who will share their own perspective and insights. As they continue to exchange messages, they will develop mutual respect and understanding for each other, creating genuine bonds.
