About

Hi, I'm Beth!I've just graduated from Falmouth University with a First Class result in BA Illustration. I gravitate towards narrative themes and am particularly interested in the ethereal, the psychological and the intangible in my work - always looking for opportunities to weave layers of symbolism into my imagery. I work predominantly with traditional media (graphite and coloured pencils) but sometimes add some digital colour manipulation in the final stages.I tend to choose narrative projects that allow me to explore surreal imagery, often trying to find new, exciting ways to tell well-known stories. For example, during my final project, I created a series of traditionally made illustrations for Shakespeare's The Tempest, drawing inspiration from the unsettling and theatrical Carnival masks of Venice, as an eerie twist!I am hoping to build a career as a freelance illustrator: both for older children/young adults' publishing and the psychology/wellbeing-based editorial sector.

'The Tempest'

A series of 3 traditional illustrations based on Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', to be exhibited at St Endellion Classical Music Festival. I wanted to retell the well-known story in a fresh, exciting, and perhaps unsettling way. I took inspiration from a recent trip to Venice during Carnival season, using the uncanniness of masks to communicate the supernatural elements of the story, as well as serving as a nod both to its theatrical history and Italian setting. Each artwork depicts a scene from the play and is rendered with many layers of coloured pencils, to give a rich and ethereal quality to the colours. 2 out of the 3 originals were bought by visitors at the exhibition in August. I have also attached some of my sketchbook pages from the development of this project.
