Sandra Jao, a creator from the Philippines, began her fashion journey in Tokyo, where she initially focused on the foundational aspects of garment construction at Bunka Fashion College. After completing her studies in design, she advanced to the Master’s program at Bunka Fashion Graduate University, specializing in Fashion Technology.Sandra’s work is characterized by her commitment to blending traditional techniques with modern innovations. Drawing inspiration from historical fashion, culture, art, and modern technology, she creates designs that push the boundaries of fashion, reflecting her distinctive vision and creativity.
"Thomas(ine)" is an exploration of the relationship between the body, gender, and clothing. From a historical perspective, the study traces the influence of gender norms and physical ideals on the silhouette of fashion. Inspired by the life of Thomasine Hall, an English intersex person, and the androgynous icons of the glam rock period, the research proposes clothing that blends the masculine and the feminine to create a new silhouette. Drawing from the gender-neutral aesthetics of tech and sportswear, this collection transcends gender frameworks, focusing on the diversity of clothing and achieving flexibility to adapt to various styles of wear through the incorporation of YKK AiryString® tapeless zippers.
