About

I'm a 3rd year textiles student at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, specialising in knit, with an interest in community art, art therapy and sustainable textile design. I studied HNC Contemporary Art Practice at Dundee and Angus College and graduated with an A, and am now studying a BDes(Hons) in textile design.I have previously run art classes with support from Uppertunity and Changemakers to support disabled adults in Dundee, as well as volunteering with local mental health charities, and I am looking to complete more voluntary work in this sector in the future. I have just completed my Signature-accredited level 3 qualification in BSL (British Sign Language).

For this project I decided to look at the mental health benefits of angling/fishing. I noticed that a lot of idioms related to mental health also contain terms that reminded me of fishing. I looked at waves, fishing reel and knot construction and the making of fishing rigs as well as flies. When on the Dubied machines I experimented with elastic to make interesting structures and made a lot of cords. For the mixed media element, I combined beads, monofilament and fishing weights. I used a lot of embellishment after taking my pieces off the machine which I thought added to the pieces. I decided to go for 6 more simple constructions for my final samples.
