About

Madelaine-Rose boldly uses colour, patterns and self-expression as key features in her hand embroidery practice, those key areas lead her to combine intricate stitch with a modern twist, she plays with elements of subverting from traditional rules of hand embroidery. The artist is heavily inspired by mysterious Cornish love stories and translates them in her own fresh and individual way.  Being true to who you are as a practitioner is a main belief of hand embroiderer, Madelaine-Rose. She believes that individual identity within work should be a true reflection of yourself as an artist, regardless of the audience. She finds maintaining this integrity connects to the viewers which allows them to connect and feel emotion towards the work. Madelaine-Rose gathers a lot of inspiration from colours and transforms them into expressional stitches, she uses a wide range of hand embroidery techniques.

urban sirens : mysterious love story meets street wear and graffiti

Madelaine-Rose’s Urban Sirens: Mysterious love story meets street wear and graffiti. The mythical and mysterious Cornish love tale, ‘The Mermaid of Zennor’ has been Madelaine-Rose’s inspiration. The tale takes us through an unconventional love story between a Cornish man with perfect pitch and a beautiful stranger who is secretly a mermaid. To portray this enchanting story through hand embroidery Madelaine-Rose uses the important artform of self-expression to showcase ‘The Mermaid of Zennor’ in her own bold and individual artistic style. Madelaine-Rose blended the story in unpredicted ways, she used the process of graffiti and spray painting to add texture and depth to her designs. Her use of unconventional materials has included creating embellishments from tin cans. Her work is very colourful, and texture led, so she picked three main colours that she felt had a connection between her and the story. Blue, Red, and Green were the colours she envisioned on reading the tale. Her self-expression can be seen through texture, shape, and pattern firstly to inspire drawings and designs, which then she translates into a combination of traditional and experimental hand embroidery.
