Woven Colour, Laura’s final MA project is an exploration of colour, texture and traditional hand weaving processes. Influenced by architecture viewed during a trip to Cuba, she creates abstract paintings. Striking juxtapositions exist within the mottled, worn surfaces adjacent to smooth, extravagant façades. Interpreting these textures are what drives her work. This artwork is a crucial step in translating the source into woven cloth. Experimentation with dyes play a vital role in forming a distinct colour aesthetic. The final palette reflects layers of eroded paint as pastel washes, in contrast with rich, vibrant midtones. Detailed textured areas are created with intricate weave patterns and specially selected wool yarns. Aran Tweed spun in Donegal, Ireland provides structure and depth, while chunky mohair and bouclé inject tactility. Laura fuses tapestry techniques with hand weaving processes on a computerised AVL Dobby handloom. It is important for her to expose how this traditional craft can be used to create exciting, contemporary work which brings a sense of comfort and intrigue to a space.
