About
I am a surface print and pattern designer, specialising in furnishing design. My prints and patterns are designed for upholstery fabrics and home furnishings. Inspired by geometric shape found within architecture and heritage. My work is often inspired by Bradford's textile heritage taking colour and shape inspiration from mill architecture and industrial machinery. My work uses weaving in a traditional and contemporary sense, creating digital concepts using the traditional use of warp and weft. As well as weaving and dyeing wool felt for acoustic solutions. Working closely with the The Society of Dyers and Colourists to explore their archive for colour inspiration.
My graduate collection Industrious Colour is a print and surface textile design project exploring how Bradford’s textile heritage can influence contemporary practices. Merging traditional slow crafted techniques with mass production processes to create functional art pieces. These pieces are made from wool felt to pay homage to Bradford’s textile past, the panels are designed for acoustic solutions in public spaces. The idea for this came from using private study spaces at university, that are designed to be quiet spaces. However, these spaces are not sound proofed and are painted white. Due to being at an arts university I thought that these spaces would work better if they had colour as well as sound proofing.
An exploration into colour within interior furnishings. Creating a colour palette using a sample box from the SDC archive in Bradford. A continued exploration into my secondary graduate collection Digital Weave. Creating physical furnishing products from start to finish, from designing fabrics, to choosing chairs and finishes. Creating custom and sustainable furnishings from reclaimed furniture. This project was made possible due to funding from The Society of Dyers and Colourists.
Exploring how weave can be translated into digital design, using shape to reflect the weft and warp of woven fabrics. Repeatedly using rectangles to imitate the weave and weft of fabric while working within a digital realm. Using a colour palette derived from primary imagery at the Society Of Dyers And Colourists archive in Bradford. A secondary collection for my graduate project.
Woven paper samples using primary imagery from Salt's Mill, Bradford Industrial Museum and Lister Mills. Exploring how these images can be disconnected and and manipulated back together. This way of initial drawing informed the idea for my Industrious Colour felt panels, using paper weave to plan the wool felt panels.
Concept for a mural to bring joy and colour into Leeds student area Hyde Park. Using found shape and colour in this area to create a geometric mural.
