Amelia Wong is a Hong Kong born product designer. She holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from MIT and a Product Design degree from the Royal College of Art. She aspires to use her interdisciplinary background to push the boundaries of conventional product design within an ecologically sustainable framework.
Her current series of work ‘Flection’ explores an innovative joining system using metal tube bending and deformation in lieu of traditional assembly methods such as welding and fixings, potentially streamlining assembly processes.
The ‘Flection’ series explores using metal bending and deformation as an innovative joining system in lieu of traditional assembly methods such as welding and additional fixings. This joining method looks to streamline the manufacturing process by potentially reducing assembly processes, energy, and parts used. The bending detail also brings an unexpected and interesting visual language to metal furniture. A range of furniture pieces have been produced each exploring different typologies, materials, and joining structures. The ‘Flection’ series includes coffee tables, side tables, and a deck chair. These works will continue to be expanded exploring the full potential of this novel join.
