Through my time at university, I have always found myself back at the knit machines. Although CAD, garment design and garment make all fed into my learning. I found my creative practice revolved around my knitting. This meant that I always gravitated back to the domestic machines, going into hand manipulation to play with shape and fitting, communicating my ideas through stitch. My FMP is centred around exploring the idea of women in myths, retelling the male centred tales through knitwear. Women in tales have been widely shown as temptress and creatures to be saved. In Greek mythology, nymphs, the focus of this project, are mostly seen in art being abducted or raped by Greek gods, reinforcing this idea that women are to be captivated and domesticated by their male counterparts. In my project I hope to look at nature around me to inspire stitch development and communicate this intrinsically feminine nature.
This project was inspired by women in greek myth, specially nymphs. Looking at how mythological tale is centred around male desire and fantasies. Throughout the project I've attempted to reclaim these tales into ones focused on female greatness and courage, placing women at the center of their own story. With sustainable approaches i designed and created a collection focused on minimal impact processes.
