I am a knitwear designer who focuses on delicacy, detail and the combination of different knit techniques to evoke a mood. Knitting is a means for me to find comfort in new places, to express my emotions through the uncomfortable and give me a sense of home. I enjoy working across different machine gauges and yarns to explore a design idea in many ways and develop them into a collection. I also enjoy collaborating across other disciplines to develop my skills as I worked on three collaborations across my final major project.
This projects falls under the 'Arts' category for the TexPlus competition. This collection explores the intimacy of one’s comfort zone, my relationship with sleep and aims to evoke a sense of comfort.. Drawn from my childhood photographs of peaceful sleep and also romantic paintings I created a feminine textile collection for fashion. I employed lace effects through eyelets, tucks and open work stitches. Drapes and creases of bedding were achieved through pleats, ripples, and net jacquards with lightweight yarns such as cotton, viscose and elastic to create contrast, using a variety of domestic and industrial machine techniques. I’ve also explored the process of natural dyeing to create subtle gradients that complement the pastel colour palette. I used hand craft techniques like crochet to create trims and wove in textured yarn with a focus on craftsmanship.
This project was a collaboration between me and creative direction student Vedantika Varma. The project was based on the theme of Indian sensuality for which Vedantika created a zine with works from other Indian designers and artists. For this project I made a fully fashioned top and created my own book as a result.
