Chu Winnie Cheung is a Chinese jewelry ar1st. She received her BFA in Translation and Interpretation in China, and MFA in Jewelry+Metalsmithing at RISD.
Her work is rooted in Chinese culture and land, fusing native philosophies and values into practice. Her recent work explored and restored the relationship between humans and nature, with cloud as a carrier, at the same time shed light on the censorship of language in Mainland China, creating a miserable contrast with the ease of clouds. Through her jewelry, she documents a diverse range of texts that expose societal constraints imposed on Chinese people.
Clouds are free, drifting with no set forms, reminding me of the mysterious and wonderous connection between individuals and the natural world. I explore the freedom between human and nature and restore the free and wild perceptual channels between them. By documenting a diverse range of texts in China that expose societal constraints imposed on it people, I extend the definition of freedom to the perspectives of Chinese society and individuals through the format of jewelry. It is a miserable contrast of the freely floating clouds, and serves as a warning and memorial.
