This body of work was shot for my final major project at University. Titled ‘Thalassa’ (which means ‘the personification of the sea’) and published in Pap Magazine, this photographic series investigates the idea of mutation in sea life, effectively merging humankind and life beneath the surface of the sea in order to create a series of ‘mutated’ hybrid characters. The piece asks the question ‘what might we look like if one day we were forced to mutate and evolve in order to live our lives underwater?’ Fuelled by fantasy, the work serves as a reaction to the increasingly cataclysmic news circulating these days; offering the viewer a surreal form of escape. Initially, I wanted to use this project to visually convey the notion of ‘nature reclaiming the earth’ by means of blending together fashion and the natural world. Through further brainstorming and research, I refined this down to something a little more intriguing and personal. I did some research into creatives who marry nature and humankind in their work, like South Korean Photographer Cho Giseok and Claire Partington, an artist and ceramicist. I also watched programmes like Blue Planet and several YouTube documentaries on sea life which informed some of the creative choices I made. I then did some sketches to help me visualise some of the characters I wanted to create and how certain lighting would work with each look.
