While in Ancient times the red thread was considered to be the symbol of bloodline and kinship, now the problem of disunity appeared and became the most important one. According to the research, the red thread is a symbolic amulet object based on the need to have a sacred connection with the family, close people and society. Modern artists have a wider interpretation of this idea trying to make a point that all humans are despite the differences in nationality, religion, age, hobbies, humans are socially united therefore there shouldn’t be any feud and dislikes between people. The aim goal of the project is the creation of a fashion clothing-amulet collection, based on the red thread symbol being the protection object and the reflection of social and family connection. This project aims to create a fashion collection of clothing-amulet where elements of red thread act as a charm: embroidery, weaving, knots, and fabric dyeing with red pigment. To reflect the involvement with family using family photo archives, project designer's family members' artistic works. The social focus of the project lies in creating one fabric for this collection by people of different gender and age to symbolize the unification of these previously not connected people into one family. This diploma project made of exclusively created fabric and styles, textile dyeing, and accessories that correlate with the project’s concept. Every outfits has a colour accent on the left side.
My final project “Debri” (wild forest) in Master’s degree. I was in the city of Sorrento (Italy) and I saw an abandoned mill. The old mill is mysteriously located in a gorge closed to people and becomes overgrown with primeval forest. I liked the idea of combining antiquity with modernity. Therefore, I remembered the old Slavic word “Debri” and I began to explore the use of this symbol in art. Since many artists and writers have used the image of wild nature, so I decided to use the Brothers Grimm fairy tales as the main source of inspiration for patterns and finding details for the design. I decided to develop my own forest and fairy tale. Link to my portfolio : https://www.behance.net/daryabalnykova/projects
