My master’s project is a ring series created as data materialization, allowing us to experience the data describing environmental changes firsthand. The rings’ minimalist design embodies elements of Lake Balaton’s delicate ecosystem, specifically representing the changes in the area and quality of the coastal reed beds between 2003 and 2020. The jewelry wears down over time, raising the question: what causes more harm, human intervention or natural processes.
The UNTOUCHABLES jewellery series explores the natural taboos of touch in the material relationship between volcanic tuff and copper. It evokes our traditional setting stone rings, but its man-made structure does not require us to adapt to natural forms. Its composition reminds us of raw minerals and our relationship to them, contrasting the relationship between the jewellery we wear and the fragile living world. A distorted mirror of our own constructed worldview.
