Grace Tayo is a London-based designer, specialising in menswear and knitwear. Her work pulls inspiration from her Nigerian heritage and through the choice of muses to provide a context and personality to each collection.
Syncopation - a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm. Jazz legend Miles Davis and vintage promotional posters have inspired the bold and colourful menswear collection, which embraces texture and toughness tempered with beautiful, soft innovative knits. A vibrant geometric African printed textile is both a personal link to family and heritage (a gift from my mother), but also embodies the movement and energy of Jazz. Jacket and shirt staples are sharply re-invented with subtle twists, combining the craft skills in tactile knitted pieces with tailored menswear. The knitwear pieces were made from dead stock industrial sewing threads, combining multiple cones to create my unique colourways and yarn weights. These materials were from the BFC Student Fabric Initiative. To describe a few, the V-neck combines multiple cones to create light and dark blues. It features a technique where alternating tensions make a 3D effect and see-through mesh look and stitched to create my interpretation of a classic cable knit vest. The crochet vest was one of the longest processes - the sewing thread was handmade into a custom corded yarn and then crocheted into the garment shape.
