Josephine Kustermann is a textile designer specializing in weave, currently undertaking her studies at Central Saint Martins. Her practice is deeply informed by exploring her personal and cultural identity, with particular emphasis on her German and Iranian heritage. Through the medium of woven textiles, she explores the complexities of origin, memory, and belonging, translating familial histories and cultural symbolism into material form. Kustermann‘s work frequently engages with themes of duality, integrating traditional references within contemporary textile practices. Her approach is both research-led and materially driven, resulting in constructed textiles that serve as both personal narratives and broader reflections on heritage and identity.
Dual Roots, is a project which explores my lineage and cultural heritage through the intertwined personal narrative of my German and Iranian background. The collection encompasses research from both grandfathers, focusing on using only naturally died yarns researched from textile practices from my heritage. Designed for unisex streetwear, specifically waistcoats, shirts and jackets, the collection is inspired by the design of traditional Bavarian clothing, and my connection towards it.
