About

Róisín O’Connor (b.1991) lives and works in the UK and over the past 10 years her practice has been focused on wheel-thrown forms. After completing a BA at the Courtauld Institute of Art, she went onto complete a pottery skills and design training with the Design and Craft Council of Ireland in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, later enrolling with the Royal College of Art for a MA in Ceramics and Glass, graduating 2023.

There is a quiet integrity involved in the study of nature, like the quiet determination of being on the pottery wheel, the tool with which I make my pieces. These forms are imbued with a sense of methodical growth. I commune with my internal mycelium network, letting the fungi speak through me. I’m attempting to recreate that dopaminergic rush released when I make discoveries of enigmatic specimen from more-than-human communities: an abandoned nest, oak wasp gall, slime mould or stalagmite. To encounter the work is to feel something akin to wonder; made by a creature, force of nature, or magic. Each work is imbricated with the essence of these things and places. My ambition is to lean into instinct, letting my craft skills translate this message just like a spider or bird making a web or nest. I want to generate a sense of material phenomenon and metaphor through imaginative surface treatment.
