About

As a visual artist and photographer, Seren Willicombe's work is deeply rooted in her personal experiences, her relationships, and the Welsh landscape. Seren's creative process is as important to her as the final product, and she places great emphasis on experimentation and exploration.

She employs time-based photography techniques as well as 3D printing to create process-led works that are unique. Through her art, she aims to capture the essence of her subjects and their environment in a way that is raw and authentic. Her work is a celebration of the beauty and complexity of the natural world and its ability to shape our identities and our relationships. Through her art, Seren invites viewers to reflect on their own relationships and connections to the landscape. Her work is an invitation to slow down, to take notice of the world around us, and to embrace the beauty and complexity of our own relationships with the landscape.

As a visual artist and photographer, the Welsh language and culture are important to Seren because they offer a unique and rich source of inspiration and subject matter. The vibrant landscapes, rich history, and strong cultural identity of Wales provide a wealth of material to explore and interpret through her art, while the Welsh language adds an additional layer of depth and meaning to her work. Additionally, by engaging with Welsh language and culture, she is able to connect with and support the her local communities and individuals who are keeping these traditions alive.

The landscape of South Wales has been manufactured and shaped by the interference of the coal mining industry. Many communities both small and large began to disband with the closures of the mines, also destroying the natural landscape. Communities began to diverse and evolve alongside the physical and cultural landscape. This project explores the effects of the interference on the landscape of Craig Cefn Parc caused by the Nixon mine utilising photographic techniques and 3D printing, and including themes of hauntology, landscape and mushrooms.

Seren Willicombe’s practice focuses on three key themes: time, place, and familial ties. For Dyffryn y Helyg / Valley of the Willows, Willicombe reflects upon her family’s history and relationship to the Welsh landscape. Willicombe’s family found sanctuary in the landscapes depicted in this body of work as a result of being displaced in the Second World War. Through experimental, process-led approaches to photographic image making, this body of work explores how our sense of self is shaped by our sense of belonging to place. Utilising time-based analogue processes, Willicombe is able to capture the distinctive bond her family shares with the Welsh landscape. Mae Ymarfer Seren Willicombe yn canolbwyntio ar dair thema allweddol: amser, lle, a chysylltiadau teuluol. Ar gyfer Dyffryn yr helyg / Valley of the Willows, mae Willicombe yn ail-feddwl ar hanes a'i theulu â thirwedd Cymru. Daeth teulu Willicombe o hyd i noddfa / lloches yn y tirweddau a ddarlunnir yn y farn o waith hyn o ganlyniad i gael eu dadleoli yn yr Ail Ryfel Byd. Trwy ddulliau arbrofol a arweinir gan broses o wneud delweddau ffotograffig, mae’r darn o waith yma yn archwilio sut mae ein hymdeimlad o hunan yn cael ei ffurfio gan ein hymdeimlad o berthyn i le. Gan ddefnyddio prosesau analog seiliedig ar amser, mae Willicombe yn gallu disgrifio'r cysylltiad y mae ei theulu yn ei rannu â thirwedd Cymru.
