My graduate project is inspired by traditional Chinese kites. My hometown is the birthplace of kites, where many craftsmen have been engaged in kite-making for generations. During my childhood, kites carried a lot of memories for me. After studying abroad, I have come to appreciate the emotional bond I share with my hometown even more deeply. I find myself wandering far from home, just like the kite flies high and far but is still held by a single string. Through research on kites, I hope to better explore my feelings and the emotional connection between me and my hometown.
The silhouettes and structures of the garments are inspired by the skeletons of dragon-headed kites and swallow kites. The prints and colors are inspired by hand-painted patterns on traditional Chinese kites from the 1920s. By layering transparent fabrics, I aim to mimic the texture of traditional kite material.
