Emerging designers and artists, here’s your chance to shine in the Big Apple. Avery Dennison and Arts Thread have come together to create the second “Bright New Things” competition - this time with the winning work to be shown to millions in Times Square, New York City, in conjunction with DesignPavilion. “Bright New Things” aims to discover the world’s most forward-thinking new designers and artists - students and recent graduates who are able to combine design creativity with application consideration to create both high-impact visual branding and functional design. We are looking for your unique view on how to energise and transform everyday items in work that represents your creative vision, the design brief, and the product features of Avery Dennison graphic materials (see details below). This is a unique opportunity to see your design be part of an innovative technology installation in Times Square, as part of Design Pavilion, visited by an estimated 3 million visitors over nine days during NYCxDESIGN,New York City’s annual design week— in May 2018. THE BRIEF Avery Dennison is looking for emerging artists/designers to provide 2D imagery - think patterns, photography, illustrations, and graphics — that transform everyday objects into exciting concepts. You can either submit work you have already created or create new work. We would like you to select one of three products - either a chair, a table or a lamp, and suggest 2D artwork that would bring the product alive using pattern and colour. It would be beneficial, but not obligatory, for your concept to be accompanied by a short video introducing the story behind your concept and why it deserves a place in Design Pavilion. THE PRIZE Four winning designs will be chosen for exhibition in an installation in Times Square as part of Design Pavilion, 12th-20th May 2018. The installation will consist of a large glass cube powered by Avery Dennison’s Janela and Vela technologies, offering viewers a combination of physical and digital discovery. The four winning projects will be selected on 28th March by a judging panel that includes: Ilene Shaw - Founding Producer, Design Pavilion Harry Allen - President and Chief Creative, Harry Allen Design Hassan Rmaile - Vice President and General Manager, Avery Dennison Graphics and Reflective Solutions & Vice President, Global Technology and Ventures Angus McGuffin - Creative Director, Brand + Communication + Digital, Avery Dennison Rana Sidahmed - Creative Director, Creative + Trends + Insights - Avery Dennison The four winners will then be flown all-expenses paid to New York where they will take part in a workshop 11th - 12th April using Avery Dennison materials to develop their concepts into a final product for display at Design Pavilion. During the workshop, the finalists will be able to work with Avery Dennison Graphic Installers to create their concept designs, using materials from the Avery Dennison Graphic Portfolio. Filming of the workshop and the product creation will also be used as part of the final installation. The four winners’ work will be seen by millions during New York City Design Week and given global media coverage. It will also be promoted across the Avery Dennison, Design Pavilion, NYCxDESIGN, NASDAQ, Arts Thread web and social media channels, which are seen by brands and retailers globally. In all, this is a unique opportunity for you to have your work featured in a prestigious design show and seen by huge numbers of people around the world. THE BRIEF
