MAGIS AT DESIGN PAVILION NYC DESIGN COMPETITION

Deadline:
10th Apr 2018

UPDATE!! Congratulations to our 3 winners - see their work on show at Design Pavilion from May 12-20 2018.

Lizzy Itzkowitz, School of Visual Arts
Heng Zeng, Syracuse University
Wenkai Mao, School of Visual Arts

This year Magis presence at Design Pavilion in Times Square for NYCxDESIGN wants to involve the local community, the design schools and the design students in developing the installation’s area.

We would like you to develop the 2D artwork for the backdrop walls and floor.

Upload 5 or 6 images of recent 2D pattern, illustration, graphic work onto ARTS THREAD that you feel shows your ability to respond to our challenge to create the artwork for walls and floor that complements the Magis world.

The three winners’ work will be seen by millions during New York City Design Week and given global media coverage.

The Magis products’ installation in Times Square will be of three 10’x10’ graphics walls and floor where three different products will be placed.

Magis returns to the Design Pavilion with a bold expression of vivid color, organic forms, and a playful spirit.

Because Magis constantly challenges its design partners to achieve greater technological sophistication, its products are recognized as much for their innovative use of materials and production techniques as they are for their original designs. This is demonstrated in the products featured – from the bold geometry of Chair_One designed by Konstantin Grcic that blends structure, logic, and comfort to the sinuous simplicity of Jaime Hayon’s Milà Chair. Times Square is once again a playground with Spun designed by Thomas Heatherwick and a parade of the Eero Aarnio designed Puppy.

DEADLINE TO APPLY: Tuesday April 10 2018 11.59 PM EST

THE BRIEF

PHASE ONE

Please upload 5 or 6 images of recent 2D pattern, illustration, graphic work onto ARTS THREAD that you feel shows your ability to respond to our challenge to create the artwork for walls and floor that complements the Magis world.

PHASE TWO

The three winning designers will be given from April 16 to April 30 to complete their designs to the specifications of the printers.

We would like you to develop an artwork / visual space / graphic which will look stunning on a backdrop wall 10’x10' with a floor carpet 20’ long.

There will be three different walls placed in Times Square; each of them will include a product from Magis: the Italian contemporary design furniture company.

The main focus of this work is about developing an artwork / visual space / graphic meant to create an outstanding space. A space which is able to enhance, include or get in contrast with the product displayed.

The three products from Magis included in the three backdrop walls are the below:

  • Chair_One, design by Konstantin Grcic (2003) - Chair_One is featured by a bold geometric structure which defines its language and comfort; the shell is made of aluminum die-casted which creates a structure of flat geometric shapes that join up around the edges. The beauty of it design lies in what is missing, in the lack of material. The display will be 12 x Chair_One in BLACK.

  • Milà, design by Jaime Hayón (2016) - Milà is a plastic chair with a strong calligraphic language which comes from the Gaudì architecture. It’s really elegant and rich in every single curve. The purpose of its design project was making a poor and humble material (plastic) rich and noble using the decorative language of the Catalan Modernism. The display will be 6 x Milà in GREEN + 6 x Milà in BLACK.

  • Puppy, design by Eero Aarnio (2004) - Puppy is a plastic abstract dog designed by the Finnish design maestro whose aim was to see through children’s eyes when they draw puppies. A head, a body and legs: essential, rounded shapes that come to life in a friendly, playful and colorful object. Puppy’s intentional abstract shapes are meant to stimulate the children’s mind and imagination, embodying in those shapes their own puppy. The display will be 20 x Puppy in ORANGE in 4 sizes.
