About:

Yi Hsuan is a textile designer who recently received her MFA in Textiles from Parsons School of Design in 2020. As a curious maker who loves to integrate handcraft and technology to create biodegradable textiles, and a fashion-designer-turned textile florist who enjoys discovering the littlest surprises from the natural world, she has been cooking, weaving, braiding and gardening a glorious world of flowers from agar and food waste with the respect to natural materials and the love of organic colors and textures.

Bringing nature’s beauty into interior space with an awareness in environmental impact is my primary pursuit as a designer . I created a faux flower making system with agar, food waste and 3D printed molds. I have been cooking, weaving, braiding and gardening a glorious world of bio-degradable agar textiles with my respect for natural materials and my love of organic colors and textures. I use agar, the high-strength gel extracted from red seaweed, as the main material for my art practice for its incredible moldability and bio-degradability. I am continually experimenting with the use of natural and waste materials as dyes and texturizers for agar flowers. I will continue exploring the beauty of agar flowers and building a glorious Agar Garden.
