Castles have been attacked, destroyed, and then neglected and possibly abandoned forever. They were built for protection, for a home, and then all of a sudden, they had no use, but years later, when all the humans had gone, nature takes over and adds its own protection to the ruins. It first starts with moss and lichen, but eventually grows into something more beautiful than what stood before. The plants that grow in these places thrive there, giving new life to the ruin. This project explores the quiet but constant dialogue between human-made structures and the natural world, focusing on the image of castles being slowly reclaimed by nature. Through a combination of woven textures and layered screen-printing, the work explores the hidden beauty in the ruin. The woven elements reflect the physical structure of castle walls and architecture, as well as the stone's decay, and, when translated into patterns, convey its grandeur and irregularity. In contrast, the screen-printed layers introduce organic forms, such as overgrown ferns, dicots and moss.
