About
Mia Zeferino-Birchall is a multi-disciplinary artist based in London, working at the intersection of textiles, craft, computation, and design. Currently in her final year of studies at Chelsea College of Art, UAL, where she is undertaking a BA in Textile Design (with Creative Computing), her practice spans mixed-media textiles and embroidery (hand, machine, and digital), creative coding, and interactive installations.
With a particular interest in exploring textiles through computational technologies, as well as the relationship between craft and art. Mia has developed an experimental and research-based practice, centred on the interconnection between embroidery and code. Engaging with both artistic and critical intentions, her work serves as a creative inquiry into craft and computational intersections within textile practice.
Cached Memories
Inspired by my time spent living in Berlin, a period of time that exists now as fragmented memories in my head. 'Cached Memories' explores memories of moments and forms once tangible and full of life as they begin to blur at the edges. Along with these memories are the hundreds/thousands of photos that captured my daily life with family and friends. Through these photos, all of the memories that I have accumulated and stored away live on. Not as tangible things but as pixels on a screen. I am made up of these memories in the same way a computer screen is made up of pixels. This collection of work calls upon the digital aesthetic through choice of colour, pixelated imagery and experimental textile techniques, as well as utilising my computational practice through interactive installations and generative embroidery. Applying stages of digital compression and abstraction to my photographs before translating them into textile and embroidery pieces. By utilising a colour palette of only eight colours, pulling from the RGB digital colour format, and the neo-impressionist technique of divisionism, my work encourages viewers to engage with each piece from different distances and perspectives. Allowing the colours to optically blend and create the illusion of digital photographs through textiles.
