‘Domestic Disruption’ explores how not all forms of protest have to be as black and white as you may think. I aim to use my textiles and my fashion as a dynamic vessel, capable of questioning and reshaping political, creative and societal structures; through a combination of colourful yarns, textures, patterns and a slightly satirical outlook, as well as addressing ideas and perspectives which are important to me as a woman and as a creative. Drawing my inspiration from the anti-establishment spirit of graffiti and its unique nature, allowed for research into artists like Pipilotti Rist and Tracey Emin, who are unapologetic in the context of their creative practice and comment on ideas surrounding women and society. Exploring and creating is a really vital part of my process, from intuitive mark-making and collage to experimenting with different yarns, techniques, knitting machines and weights of fabric. My collection creates a blend of more refined and detailed knitting in contrast with my authentic ‘craft’ skills like handknitting and crochet. ‘Domestic Disruption’ may be inspired by the fearless ‘woman’ but my textiles and fashion transpires this. I aim to design and make for all genders, all ages, all classes. There is no limit or expectation. This project is lined with the category of The Unexpected!
