About
Hello! My name is Awel and I’m a Welsh illustrator. My illustrations are mostly digital as I find that medium the most flexible with my art style. I work in a very sharp and angular style with a heavy focus on portraiture illustrations. My work mainly focuses on feminist values and character design. I concentrate on deconstructing the sexualization of femme presenting characters within media, which predominantly influences my design work. I enjoy bringing Welsh culture into alternative fashions and experimenting with unconventional ways to display Welshness, such as creating characters with punk aesthetics in traditional Welsh clothing.
A series of magazine and article editorial illustrations that focuses on femme presenting portraits and fish. Femmes, fish, and faces has been a series of illustrations I've been working on for a long time that focuses on the challenges of objectification in illustration and the sexualization of more feminine characters in media. In order to concentrate my work on contemporary political topics, I decided to focus on editorial illustrations from a variety of newspapers, magazines, and internet articles while working on this project. The design of the fish represent the mentally draining aspect that comes with objectification. The designs primarily highlight the mental toll that inherent sexualization can have on any type of person.
