About

Hello! My name is Awel and I’m a Welsh illustrator. My illustrations are mostly digital as I find that medium the most flexible with my art style. I work in a very sharp and angular style with a heavy focus on portraiture illustrations. My work mainly focuses on feminist values and character design. I concentrate on deconstructing the sexualization of femme presenting characters within media, which predominantly influences my design work. I enjoy bringing Welsh culture into alternative fashions and experimenting with unconventional ways to display Welshness, such as creating characters with punk aesthetics in traditional Welsh clothing.

A series of magazine and article editorial illustrations that focuses on femme presenting portraits and fish. Femmes, fish, and faces has been a series of illustrations I've been working on for a long time that focuses on the challenges of objectification in illustration and the sexualization of more feminine characters in media. In order to concentrate my work on contemporary political topics, I decided to focus on editorial illustrations from a variety of newspapers, magazines, and internet articles while working on this project. The design of the fish represent the mentally draining aspect that comes with objectification. The designs primarily highlight the mental toll that inherent sexualization can have on any type of person.

"Uproot" is a project pitch for a fantasy animated movie connected to the concept of living in a fantastical world whilst still enjoying the mundane aspects of life. Set within the fictional land of Nomow Kraina, it is filled with a menagerie of monsters and wandering creatures. The story revolves around found family and the struggles of trying to be a better person for the people you love. I have taken some inspiration from studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke and Dreamworks’ The Wild Robot, contrasting nature with hard industrialism. The story focuses on three main characters (Rupert, Mildred and Norman) as they struggle to survive in a harsh world as a new family. The outcome of this project is a fully design concept art book filled with the project pitch made for 'Uproot'.

The aim of this animated piece is to showcase a variety of women. I made the decision to draw twelve distinct side portraits of twelve distinct women, each completely coloured and shaded. In order to highlight the underrepresentation of women in the media, this project explicitly discusses intersectional feminism and presents a variety of women.

Displaying various types of Welsh culture in current styles. Inspired by X-Ray Spex, this specific project looks at modern takes on Welsh traditional clothing and how they would look in different styles. I value incorporating Welsh culture into alternative clothes and experimenting with unique ways to express Welshness, such as designing punk-inspired characters dressed in traditional Welsh clothes. Additionally, this project lead to me developing original characters that fight using traditional Welsh farming tools (scythes). Mae ffeministiaeth Gymraeg yn real!
