Hello! My name is Jenna- I am a 22-year-old graduate of the School of Visual Arts(SVA) with a BFA in photography and film.Throughout my journey at SVA, I have never really honed down on a certain sequence topic that I was passionate about until my final year.I wanted to focus on the idea of what "home" is for me.It is something that had signs of "live, laugh, love," but it is also a place where there is heartbreak, heartache, trauma, and confusion.I am the only Asian American in my family and one of the small percentages of Asians in my community.There was always the heightened fear of not fitting in and feeling like I don't belong in the setting in which I grew up.It has taken me longer than my senior year in college to finally confidently write about what I was feeling in my photographs when I originally didn't think I was feeling anything at all.Throughout my journey as I continue taking film photography, I wish to evoke emotions and have viewers relate to some of the images that I take.
Home is a funny concept. It is a place where signs say, "live, laugh, love," but within that phrase, there are years of heartbreak, confusion, and mental illness. There are physical and mental scars that serve as chapters for what I went through in what I consider my home growing up. It has taken me longer than my senior year in college to confidently write about what I was feeling in photographs where I originally thought I was not feeling anything at all. My life came crashing down upon losing friends to suicide in the beginning of highschool while struggling with mental health myself. Within this project, I shot photos using my 35mm film camera with black-and-white film camera, self-developed, printed in the darkroom, and scanned. The project name that I decided on is home//sick. The "//" in the title shows what the word on the left results in. Hence, home brings illness whether that is physical or mental.
