About

Textile surface design for interior and exterior application.Inspired by innovative techniques and materials; responding to themes in an abstract and contemporary way.

A project that’s aim is to create a greater awareness for the issues around child protection and safeguarding through the visual presentation of misunderstood creatures such as snakes, spiders and slugs; representing the children who fall victim of abuse that fly under the radar, due to lack of knowledge or sense of responsibility from the adults around them. Misunderstood animals are wrongly deemed to be scary or dangerous when this is often a learned behaviour. I have displayed this through a varied collection of surface samples for interior and exterior application. The intended space for these samples is a social hub, a space providing areas of co-working, social interaction and events, providing an alternative for establishments such as bars and cafés without the pressure to buy food or drinks to attend, alternatively gaining income with a membership or day pass. The nature of the location allows visitors to stay for long periods of time, making the location ideal for design with a talking point, allowing the project’s message to be spread. I have used a range of techniques to create a balanced material palette, including: 3D print, digital design, manipulation techniques and hard surface exploration. My design style is abstract and contemporary. To ensure my theme comes across I have used: tactility, layering and moving elements within the project. Creating samples that have to be interacted with to represent the idea that you may have to dig deeper to find what is really going on. Although my theme is of great importance, I wanted to ensure I was creating samples suitable for application, I have used a range of materials, varying in texture, softness and pattern to create a balance, allowing for a calm and comfy environment that also remains contemporary through its exciting use of pattern and colour.
