Patient Ground reimagines a future lithium quarry in Cornwall, UK, as a landscape of learning, challenging the separation between education and the environments it seeks to explain. Cornwall’s mining heritage once embedded knowledge within landscape through observation, labour and apprenticeship, a relationship lost alongside extraction. At Trelavour Downs, the project responds to the paradox of extracting ‘green’ resources for decarbonisation by allowing the quarry’s future educational legacy to influence the mining process itself. Carving out rock to make spaces defines by qualities rather than subjects. The Quarry School transforms geology, water, weather, making and ecology into the curriculum, with spaces shaped by their environmental qualities rather than predetermined functions. Former miners and local communities contribute to intergenerational knowledge exchange, creating new forms of stewardship. Rather than erasing the quarry’s scars, the project inhabits and learns from them, proposing a post-extractive landscape where care, responsibility and participation become Cornwall’s next inheritance. This Project was his ma architecture thesis project at the Royal College of Art 2026.
