About:

Clay gives me the opportunity to respond to that which is outside of myself and explore a world where matter and mind are in flux. My work is the result of reaching out into this physical world and finding it porous, fluid and ever slowly changing. In my current work I use a gradual mix of clays to illustrate transition: a reflection on the slow and profound change that permeates everything, always. Nothing is ever final, static, or self-contained. I find inspiration in dust and philosophy.

Emerging from an interest in neo-materialism and elements of Deleuzian philosophy, my practice is ceramic-based and is supported by drawing. It focuses on the intuitive interaction between hand as an inexact tool of the mind, and clay as a material with an endless capacity of reflecting back emotions and ideas. I am captivated by the clay’s ability to reflect ambiguous emotions and ideas, often outside the territory of language. In our everyday lives we oscillate between layers: the day job, the climate, the complexities of the political environment and the undiagnosed fragilities of our minds and bodies.  Although we cannot always perceive or control them, when these layers sediment they form a bedrock for survival. "Strata" is a title borrowed from Deleuzian philosophy where the geological image is used to describe the fundament of our existence.

"Nomadism" is an exploration of a world where matter and mind are in flux: a metaphor of the change inherent when crossing both virtual and physical territories. Growing up in one culture then living in others, I have unavoidably developed a certain sensibility towards the nature of the outsider: what it threatens and what it preserves. Crossing territories works both ways: the nomads affect the desert and the desert makes the nomads. Change is a fundamental part of existence. Emerging from an interest in neo-materialism and elements of Deleuzian philosophy my practice is ceramic-based and focused on the intuitive interaction between hand as an inexact tool of the mind and clay as a material with an enduring capacity of reflecting back emotions and ideas. “Nomadism” is an installation of 200 elements transiting from one clay to another. With each new pinch pot one gram of the starting clay is substituted with a gram of the new clay, until the transition is complete - and potentially endless.

The drawing process accompanies and informs my ceramics-based practice. My drawings are intuitive and unplanned and focus on the physicality of the gesture and the materiality of the line.
