My project, Fragility into Form explores nostalgia in an abstract way. The colours within the natural dyes I have used, sometimes just hues, paired with all over textures and subtle disappearing pattern feels reminiscent of something unknown, the same feelings old abandoned buildings create. My primary research is built on dilapidation textures, structures and rusted metals. With the inspiration of found metals and market research into weaving for the body, straight from the loom, I looked into weaving with copper yarn for structural shaping purposes and weaving with with elastics on double cloths for shaping too. This was really interesting and I'd like to research more into how the textiles industry can change the way garments are made.
My woven collection explores the dilapidation of buildings and how their decaying material tells a story the same way an old but loved item of clothing does. Focusing on the details and textures of deterioration, the collection draws inspiration from oxidised metals, crumbling brick, and remanences of pattern. The surface textures and stripped back colours found in these abandoned buildings are showcased through the use of natural fibres and natural dyes, capturing both the delicacy and the decay of such old places.
