As a project, ‘How can she stand it?’ developed from a character based around a 1950’s housewife/husband with slightly psychopathic tendencies. Throughout the project I play with the idea that they plaster on a smile while getting progressivley worse culminating in criminal acts. I became captivated by the way advertisments portrayed a certain image in the 1950’s and how this character could break those ideas apart.

The starting point for this project, ‘I Dream of Stars’, was to create a story that evolved into a comic book format, dictated by the songs I listened to whilst producing the pages. This then lead to the creation of a character, Terry, who was my nerdy reader. His aesthetic mixed with collage work and the look of the finished comic all went in to the design process.

‘Long To Reign Over Me’ is a project built around the fictional character of ‘Chip Windsor’. I envisioned him as distant relative of the royal family. Throughout the project I play with the idea that he’s looking back at the present day royals and in particular the Queen, as a style icon. I wanted to take aspects of her everyday and royal attire and mix them with a slightly punk/skater style. This characterisation of him as a rebellious royal lead me to look at royal etiquette, in particular not being able to wear denim, and break them. Overall, I wanted this to be loving, humorous, jab at the royal family, from one of their own.
