Textiles - Weave

Muslim Children are introduced to the importance of praying at the age of seven. To encourage my son to pray, I decided to design prayer rugs that were both exciting, inviting and engaging for young children. The prayer rugs are complimented with coordinating silk headscarves and fabric for Juzdan that is a cover for the Quran. For inspiration I turned to the rich heritage of my homeland, Pakistan and focused on the visual culture of the city centre of Karachi. The name of my project is derived from Bus number W11 that takes the passenger on an exciting journey to experience the real essence of Karachi. The exuberantly patterned trucks set against the magnificent British architecture of the Colonial era formed the visual information for my primary resource and colour. My colour palette is an amalgamation of the bright colours of trucks and the neutral tones of the city buildings. Double cloth weave structure has been instrumental in the transition of my design ideas onto fabric. The graphic shapes of my designs are a representation of the hustle and bustle of the busy city and have been infused with the vibrancy and richness of my colour palette. My final collection is for mothers who want to present their young children with an exciting range of products to start their religious journey. My aim is to create a fusion of function and style that can be cherished and utilized as interior accessories in non-Muslim households as well.
