My name is Merrie, and I grew up in Houston, Texas before moving to New Orleans to study architecture at Tulane University! I have since then graduated with a B.Arch degree, and a minor in Urban Studies, and am excited to now find my place within the field of architecture.

What to do with your failing mall: a guide for infrastructure driven redevelopment
By: Connor Little and Merrie Afseth In order to better integrate localized systems of metabolism within the built environment, our thesis proposes the readaptation of suburban American malls into solar energy hubs. A new model for redevelopment centers the production, distribution and storage of energy as the key driver for transformation. The introduction of autonomous solar energy infrastructure informs a field condition that serves to create a new landscape strategy. Through reframing the mall owner's role to that of an energy provider, we can envision a future where malls become attractive not only for their retail potential, but also their role in fostering community resilience.
