A 2nd Year Fashion Student with the determination to make an impact within the fashion industry.

In this collection, my aim was to combine the rebellious and aggressive side to gender neutral fashion. The emotion that it makes me feel, knowing that people are being restricted to what they can’t wear due to traditional stereotypes, individuals not having their voices heard, and living in fear due to the possibility of not being accepted. My concept began from looking at the 1968 unisex movement and how it began to change societies perception of gender stereotypes. I then looked at the seventies era to see if the unisex movement had made any developments within society. I was particularly inspired by Vivienne Westwood but not due to her genderless clothing, more due to the passion she expresses and how she manages to get her voice heard. I chose to use tartan fabric due to the modern representation, showing strength and rebellion. The impact that I want to have on society through this collection is to add more depth to why there should not be a line dividing male and female clothing.

In this project i have researched Men's Shirts from different era's. I mainly focused on the 1800's, 1920's, 1960's, and 1980's. Through this research i decided to combine 2 periods together, 1960's and 1920's. I took the pocket placement and short sleeve elements from the 1960's and the rounded collar and pleated elements from the 1920's.

This project was based on 3 words, kinetic, sculpture and light. i started to collect primary images that link to these key words. i experimented with materials that reflect off natural light and constructed pieces out of stronger materials to enhance its shape and structure. I then experimented with triangles and connecting them together so that interesting shapes are formed when movement is applied. i first experimented with heat pressing a plastic on top of fabric to create a different texture. these pieces where then cut into triangles and super glued on top of another piece of fabric. After experimenting with different ways of applying the triangles onto my final piece. i settled for vinyl as it was a lot more defined, uniform and looked more appealing on top of fabric. The vinyl was holographic as it reflects very nicely of natural lighting.

This project was based around the brand Comme des Garcons. I really enjoyed this project as it allowed me to experiment with different materials, shapes, and patterns. I was also largely inspired by Rei Kawakubo as she was a firm believe in gender neutral fashion. I read an article about the designer and it mentioned that she doesn't believe in Male or Female only human, which really stuck with me throughout this project. I decided to follow in the designers footstep and create a product for both male and female. I have also developed my vinyl experimentation further in this project by using different shapes, using the material on different materials and laying vinyl on top of vinyl.
