Advancements in technology run parallel with growing accessibility to fashion traditionally reserved for the elite. That access has sped up the demand for clothing oversaturating the industry and compromising its integrity. Furthermore, wearable tech has proven to be invasive and impractical for successful adoption. Inspired to provide a solution, Augmented Reality (AR) is an opportunity to apply animation and motion graphics to garments for interactive consumption of fashion. Through the lens of a mobile device, AR apps scan physical garments and overlay interactive digital content on them. From streamlining the retail experience to capturing consumer imagination, AR is a terminal through which we can communicate and engage people with fashion in a meaningful way. The application of AR not only dispels tech’s use as a passing trend in fashion but it does so with no disruption for the process of fashion designers. Fashion is a business, but its artistry provides the tools for our human needs to self-express through clothing. The devaluation of the cultural construct of fashion has resulted in negative repercussions for the industry. Augmented reality is non-invasive and real-time harmonizing the utility of technology with the desirable aesthetics of design. Through its relevant application to fashion, the pathology behind what motivates our consumption in this industry can be more informed and inspired.
