About:

I'm a Textile design student at National Institute of Design. My interests lie in surface design, fabric construction and textile art. My recent inclination is towards sustainable fashion embedded in the local context and up-cycling. I love working with colour, material and traditional crafts. Growing up in Jaipur, art and craft has always been a part and parcel of my day-to-day life. This exposure turned into an inclination while I was in school and pushed my curiosity to explore art not just as content but also as a medium. I have always felt that drawing is a powerful tool to materialise my thoughts and ideas whether it be drawing from observation or illustrating. My intrigue, whether of form or technique, urges me to learn quickly and also apply my learnings. This is what I want to develop further by collaborating with professionals of not just my field but of others as well, to create meaningful work. If you don’t find me in the textile studio in my college, I would probably be trying new food, listening to Bollywood or figuring out what my next art escapade is.

ECHOES With increasing issues of migration and loss of the “Pol Culture” in the Heritage city of Ahmedabad, this project titled “ECHOES” using textile panels sheds light on the way the urban population of Ahmedabad sees a part of their city. Here, art has a political or social function. I wished to use textiles to convey this visual, tactile or other sensorial appeal through its materiality, form, colour and composition to its users. ECHOES explores the inter-dependant relationship between textile properties and space making which are in turn dependent on climate, environment, user’s activities, culture and the nature of social. The aim was to create solutions using textiles that can have a larger impact on the activities and people involved in the selected spaces. Cloth can create a visual barrier and at the same time be used as an effective framing device. The compositions have been made to reflect the same intention of bring the element that exists outdoors, in the houses in the form of curtains/ panels that frame the windows and doors of the modern houses. The ‘living’ qualities of cloth allows it to take in physical substances from the air, such as odour and smoke. It can also take on someplace’s essence and come to stand for that place. It celebrates the now less valued aesthetic of the old city tapping the intangibles and metaphors of life in the Pol. This project helped me find a balance between expression and function.
